Mark H. Lawrence

Mark H. Lawrence, formerly Principal Trombone of the San Francisco Symphony for 34 years, is an active soloist, clinician, chamber musician, and teacher. He has performed at the International Brass Conference and the International Trombone Conference, and been a frequent recitalist in this country and abroad. While Principal Trombone, he was soloist with the San Francisco Symphony on several occasions and has also been a guest soloist with many other orchestras and concert bands.

Mr. Lawrence is a member of Chicago’s Music of the Baroque, and was a founding member of the famous Summit Brass ensemble. He has also been a member of the Empire Brass Quintet, the Center City Brass Quintet, San Francisco’s Bay Brass, and the Four of a Kind Trombone Quartet. In addition, Mr. Lawrence has been Principal Trombone of the Colorado Music Festival, and the Grand Teton Music Festival, and been guest Principal Trombone with the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also performed on many movie and video game soundtracks at George Lucas’ “Skywalker Ranch” in Marin County, California.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Mr. Lawrence has given masterclasses worldwide, and served on the faculties of Boston University, Tanglewood Institute, the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute, and Northwestern University. He currently teaches trombone at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara.

Mr. Lawrence’s discography includes three solo recordings, 16 chamber music recordings with Summit Brass, Empire Brass, the Center City Brass Quintet, “Four of a Kind”, and Bay Brass, and more than 30 recordings with the San Francisco Symphony, including their Grammy winning performances of Mahler Symphony nos. 3 and 7.  In addition, he is co-owner of Marco-Paulo publishing, specializing in music for the trombone.

Mr. Lawrence served on the Music Academy faculty in 1993 and 1996, and has been a faculty member since 2003.
