Tree/Peace

Music Academy cello alumnus John Popham (’05, ‘06), a founding member of the new music ensemble Longleash, received a Music Academy Alumni Enterprise Award in 2019 to help fund Longleash’s videography project, Resonant Lens. Alumna violinist Pala Garcia (’03) is also a member of Longleash. Tree/Peace, a collaboration between Longleash and Pascal Perich, explores themes of interconnectedness, collective consciousness, and receptiveness to our environment. Tree/Peace offers a visual response to American composer Pauline Oliveros’ 1984 work of the same name. The structured improvisation for violin, cello, and piano, prompts its performers to imagine, remember, and contemplate various stages in the life cycle of a tree as they play, react, and respond to each other. Tree/Peace was performed by Longleash and filmed by Pascal Perich onsite at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest (Bardstown, KY), the Loretto Motherhouse (Nerinx, KY), and in New York City. Open to all Music Academy Alumni, the Alumni Enterprise Awards fund innovative projects and ideas in several areas, including artistic expression, audience development, education, community engagement, social justice and technology.
