Benjamin Salisbury
adjudicator
Benjamin Salisbury, Senior Manager of the Steinway & Sons Concert & Artist Division, works recurrently with west coast arts organizations including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Chamber Music Northwest, Music@Menlo, the Ojai International Music Festival, the Music Academy, and hundreds of venues across the United States to support the most renowned concert pianists of our time. He holds advanced degrees in piano performance including Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where he was a top prizewinner and award recipient under the guidance of mentor Norman Krieger. Concerto performances by Salisbury include Gershwin’s Concert in Fwith the Thornton Symphony (streaming on YouTube), the Winchester Orchestra of San Jose, repeat appearances with the Utah State Symphony Orchestra, and other regional and festival orchestras. Streaming on Apple Music, Salisbury’s recordings at the keyboard include an album for the Delos label with the Asia/America New Music Institute featuring works by Ye Xiaogang, Sayo Kogui, and Narong Prangcharoen, as well as the soundtrack of the feature film Devil’s Tree, and for the Toro label as choral director on Chad Cannon’s Dreams of a Sleeping World. Salisbury enjoys collaborating with members of the LA Philharmonic including a duo recital with concertmaster Martin Chalifour and several commissioned compositions for violist Minor Wetzel. Salisbury’s original choral compositions have premiered with Canticum Novum under the direction of Seth Houston, and with the Saints Choir of Southern California where Salisbury has served as music director for nearly a decade. As lecturer, Dr. Salisbury has taught at USC, the USU Caine College of the Arts, and presented regular pre-concert lectures for the Philharmonic Society of Orange County including concerts by the New York Philharmonic, Yo-Yo Ma, and Emmanuel Ax. Through his role at Steinway, Salisbury sits in close audience with hundreds of today's top performing musicians and pianists, carefully observing their approach to musical excellence both onstage and off.
