PHILIP L. BERNSTEIN joined the Music Academy Board of Directors in January 2013. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Bernstein studied French and history at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, before earning an MBA at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance. He has spent his entire career at Jacob Stern & Sons, an international distributor of fats, oils, and chemicals based in Santa Barbara. Currently the firm’s board chairman, he previously served as president and CEO. Mr. Bernstein was a Music Academy Board member from 2002 to 2008, serving as secretary in 2003, second vice chair in 2004, and first vice chair in 2005. He also chaired the Strategic Planning (2003-2005, 2018-2019) and the Legal Affairs and Policies committees (2003). Mr. Bernstein has served on the Board of Corporators for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and previously chaired the Board of Trustees for the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. With his wife, Leslie, Mr. Bernstein has resided in Montecito since 1984.
